Art Walks in the Hawaiian Islands

The verdant mountains, star blanketed sky, rocky shorelines, and distinct culture of the Hawaiian Islands can inspire artists like no other place in the world. Why not explore Hawaii beyond the beach and through the eyes of a local artisan? Whether it is through painting, sculpture, jewelry, digital mediums, or photography, several art walks take place around the islands showcasing local talent and inviting visitors to enjoy a different view of Hawaii. Here are a few:

First Friday (Oahu) – Downtown Honolulu’s most exciting monthly event takes place on the First Friday of each month, beginning at 5 p.m. Join urban professionals and local hipsters as Chinatown’s many galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and cafés open their doors for free exhibits and entertainment. The Chinatown Boardroom surf boutique, MAMo Gallery of Native Hawaiian art, and The ARTS at Marks Garage are just a few of the galleries open to browsing. Hawaiian music concerts on the lawn of Hawaii State Art Museum and special events at the Hawaii Theatre are regularly scheduled. Not tired yet? Revel in a late night block party and imbibe at some of Oahu’s trendiest bars. FirstFridayHawaii.com

Maui Friday Town Parties (Maui) – Beginning in late 2011, Maui began holding town parties every Friday highlighting art, music, and Maui culture. Residents and visitors enjoy free entertainment, special offerings, and Maui Friday-only promotions from participating vendors. The parties have a small-town feel and begin on first Fridays in Wailuku, then second Fridays in Lahaina, with third Fridays in Makawao, and fourth Fridays in Paia. MauiFridays.com

Hanapepe Art Walk (Kauai) – Every Friday night from 6-9 p.m., Kauai’s “biggest little town” of Hanapepe lights up with art, music, food, and fun. Stroll along the two-mile stretch of Hanapepe Road to visit more than two dozen art galleries and meet local artisans and crafters. Local musicians perform live. Hanapepe.org

Holualoa Village Art and Coffee Stroll (Hawaii Island) – What pairs well with art on Hawaii Island? Coffee, naturally. The Holualoa Village Art and Coffee Stroll is a highlight of the annual Kona Coffee Festival taking place each November. This daylong event at the quaint Holualoa Village features a diverse collection of art galleries and local artists, along with more than two dozen estate Kona coffee farms. KonaCoffeeFest.com
