Maui Kaanapali Villas Shrinks its Carbon Footprint by 35 Percent
Maui Kaanapali Villas recently announced the completion of its yearlong, $6.7-million sustainability enhancement project, which cut CO2 emissions at the 260-room condominium-resort by an amount equivalent to CO2 emissions from, individually, 26,434 barrels of oil, 2,173 passenger vehicles and the energy needed to power 967 homes for a year. The project included improvements to the property's plumbing and wastewater infrastructure, and the installation of a modernized air conditioning system, photovoltaic panels, a solar heating system for the resort's swimming pools, and more than 500 LED lightbulbs along walkways throughout the 11-acre resort. 43rd Annual Nā Mele O Maui Song and Art Competition Set for December
This year's annual Nā Mele o Maui song and art competition will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Hawai‘i music awards by honoring winners of the Na Hōku 2017 competition. With a theme of Hanohano nā Hōkū (Honor Nā Hōkū), the 43rd annual Nā Mele o Maui is set for December 5 at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. Nā Mele o Maui is open to student musicians from kindergarten to grade 12, who will each sing two songs in the Hawaiian language for the competition. Student artists entered in the competition will each submit an artwork inspired by a song. Nā Mele o Maui is sponsored by the Kā'anapali Beach Resort Association, Akakū Maui Community Media, the Kamehameha Schools Alumni Association, and Maui Arts and Cultural Center with a mission of perpetuating Hawaiian art and music. It's estimated that more than 500 million plastic straws are used and discarded daily in the United States, posing a significant threat to local wildlife. Maui Ocean Center's Seascape Restaurant, Reef Café and Coffee Shack have joined the Strawless Ocean Movement, replacing their single-use plastic straws with biodegradable paper straws. The new paper straws are both compostable and biodegradable, take 30 to 60 days to decompose, and are BPA and elemental-chlorine free. PGA Tour Sentry Tournament of Champions Returns to Kapalua Plantation Course
The PGA Tour's Sentry Tournament of Champions is returning to Kapalua Golf's Plantation Course, with competition set for January 3-7. Justin Thomas will be back on the course to defend his 2016 tournament title against top pro golfers and past champions, including Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka, Rickie Fowler, Hideki Matsuyama and more. Since 1999, the tournament has raised almost $6 million for multiple Hawai‘i charities. Youth ages 18 and under are invited to attend the tournament free with a ticketed adult. Giving Back to Maui with Volunteers on Vacation
Volunteers on Vacation is a free year-round program offered by the Pacific Whale Foundation to help residents and visitors find meaningful volunteer service projects benefitting Maui's environment. Participants enjoy special access to scenic locations for their volunteering, and learn about the history and natural ecosystems of the areas they visit. Volunteer opportunities are offered regularly at Haleakalā National Park every first and third Saturday. Other Volunteer on Vacation partners include the Hawaiian Islands Land Trust, Mālama Honokōwai, Hoaloha Ā‘ina and O‘o Farm. Volunteers can also participate in Volunteers on Vacation's citizen-science marine debris removal and reporting program and do beach clean-ups on their own schedule.
