LIHUE, KAUAI – Trade in the snow and chill of winter for the enticing warmth of Kauai, where rejuvenation is found amidst the lush tropical surroundings, beautiful white-sand beaches, and spectacular blue skies.

“Kauai is the perfect remedy to escape the winter blues,” said Sue Kanoho, executive director of the Kauai Visitors Bureau. “Our diversity of outdoor activities combined with Kauai’s incredible natural beauty and idyllic serenity allows travelers to unwind, relax, and re-charge their batteries.”

The following are updates and information about the newest happenings, specials and events that are “blooming” on the Garden Isle of Kauai this winter.


Kauai Loves Elvis! – January 18
Forty years after Elvis Presley’s most famous concert performance – Aloha from Hawaii – the island of Kauai will celebrate this memorable event with a fun, festive evening on Friday, January 18. Called Kauai Loves Elvis!, this special night out with the “King of Rock ‘n’ Roll” will feature a delicious buffet dinner, silent auction of Elvis memorabilia, and be capped with an exciting performance by an Elvis Presley tribute artist who has been hailed as one of the best. Kauai Museum Traditional Hawaiian Paina
Beginning Friday, January 4, and every first Friday of the month thereafter, Kauai Museum will present its Hawaiian Paina featuring culinary favorites from award-winning Chef Mark Oyama and live Hawaiian music. Hosted in the newly renovated courtyard from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., the Hawaiian Paina costs only $15 for adults (children ages 5-10, $8.00). This new exciting monthly event is the perfect complement to the “Walking Tour of the Historic County Building” hosted by Chairman Jay Furfaro, which also takes place on the first Friday beginning at 10:00 a.m.

New App Showcases Kauai’s Beaches
A new iPhone app, the Kauai Beach Guide, is making it easy for anyone to find his or her perfect beach when visiting the Garden Isle. The app provides a wealth of information on Kauai’s beaches, including location, activities, safety, and facilities offered, as well as color-coded designations as to a beach’s safety level. Other tools include a fully interactive GPS-enabled map, detailed beach information, area history, ocean and weather reports, along with information on water safety, child-friendly beaches, marine life, and how to “go green” while staying on Kauai. Alaska Airlines Launches San Diego – Lihue Flight
Alaska Airlines is launching nonstop service between San Diego, California, and Kauai in 2013. The new nonstop route will begin on June 7 and will be introduced as a daily flight during peak travel months until August 24. The flight will then operate four times weekly.

Alaska Airlines Flying Nonstop from Portland
Alaska Airlines is now offering nonstop service, four flights weekly, between Portland, Oregon, and Kauai. The new nonstop flights, which began November 5, are being operated with Boeing 737-800 aircraft, seating 16 passengers in first class and 141 in coach.

New Nonstop East Coast – Hawaii Service
Getting to Kauai from the East Coast is a lot easier with the new nonstop flights that were launched this summer to Honolulu from New York City and Washington, DC.

On June 5, Hawaiian Airlines, Hawaii’s hometown carrier, launched daily nonstop service between New York City’s JFK Airport and Honolulu, making this the only direct flight between the two cities. Hawaiian is using its new 294-seat Airbus A330-200 aircraft to operate the route. With a 3:00 p.m. arrival in Honolulu, New York visitors can make several easy flight connections to Kauai.

On June 7, United Airlines began daily nonstop service between Washington, DC’s Dulles International Airport and Honolulu. United is using its Boeing 767-400 aircraft to provide the only nonstop service between the two cities.

Kauai Beach Resort Property Updates
This oceanfront resort is going green with the installation of 2,400 photovoltaic panels and has made enhancements to its recycling, waste removal and LED lighting programs. Guests can also enjoy Wi-Fi access throughout the property along with new pool umbrellas and menu items at Naupaka Terrace and Shutters Lounge.

Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa Introduces Refreshed Keiki Menu
Earlier this year the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa launched Food. Thoughtfully Sourced. Carefully Served. As part of this initiative, the resort has now unveiled a completely revamped keiki (children’s) menu called “For Kids By Kids.” The Hyatt food and beverage team worked closely with a youth group to ensure that the new menu not only met Hyatt’s standards for nutrition and quality, but also was fun and tasty. In addition, Tidepools restaurant offers a three-course organic menu for children exclusively developed by renowned food pioneer and chef, Alice Waters.

The Parrish Collection and The Club at Kukuiula - A Luxury Partnership in Poipu
The Parrish Collection and The Club at Kukuiula are working together to provide unique 5-Star accommodations and service on the island. The Club at Kukuiula, Kauai's only private Club, is home to a luxurious Plantation House with restaurant, bar, game rooms and series of pools and outdoor activities. In addition, there is a state of the art fitness facility and world-class spa, along with an 18-hole Tom Weiskopf-designed golf course recently named Best New Private by Golf Magazine and Best New Golf Course by Robb Reportʻs “Best of the Best.”  The new Club Cottages at Kukuiula, which can be rented on a nightly basis through The Parrish Collection, are located within walking distance to the Club and included with the stay is complete access to this private club community and their amenities.

Photo Safari Hawaii Announces New National Tropical Botanical Garden Tour
Photo Safari Hawaii introduces “A Walk in Queen Emma’s Garden,” the first private photo ecotour of the Allerton and McBryde National Tropical Botanical Gardens in Lawai Valley.  This four-hour tour helps to enhance photography skills while focusing on landscape design with an exclusive access to the McBryde Waterfall.  Both gardens showcase the botanical importance of native plants and provide a stunning photography canvas for any skill level.

Outfitters Kauai Introduces New Tandem Ziplines
Outfitters Kauai is excited to announce the addition of three new tandem ziplines this fall. The new lines will pass over three separate waterfalls on the pristine Kipu Ranch and will range between 800 feet and 1,200 feet. Incorporating Outfitters Kauai’s existing zipline course, these new lines will highlight the spectacular views and thrilling adventure as guests soar over lush valleys side by side.

Koloa Zipline, Kauai’s Newest Zipline Course
Koloa Zipline has debuted with eight ziplines on its course located on the south side of the island in Koloa. Koloa Zipline’s “Waita” line is the longest on the island coming in at 2,500 feet and glides across the Waita reservoir, which is the largest reservoir in Hawaii. The entire course is 1.5 miles long and is located on the beautiful Grove Farm land that offers marvelous views of a variety of ecosystems. Koloa Zipline is committed to the preservation of the natural beauty and rich history of the land.

New Executive Chef for Sheraton Kauai Resort
Roger Liang has been appointed the new executive chef for Sheraton Kauai Resort. He is overseeing all of the resort’s food and beverage operations, including one of the south shore’s newest hotspots, RumFire Poipu Beach. Liang previously served as the resort’s executive sous chef, and had an integral role in revitalizing its culinary program.


The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas
The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas is offering a Stay and Play package for golf lovers. With a minimum two-night stay, the package includes two rounds of golf at the world-renowned Prince Course with room rates starting at $300 per night for a Deluxe Island-View Studio. Each of the Westin Princeville’s well-appointed villas feature signature Heavenly Bed & Bath products, a fully equipped kitchen, in-room washers and dryers, LCD flat-screen televisions with DVD players, complimentary Internet and no resort fees. The Stay and Play promotion is available from now through December 31.

New Three-Day Unlimited Golf Package At Princeville’s Makai Golf Club
The Makai Golf Club at The St. Regis Princeville Resort has announced a new Three-Day Unlimited Golf Package and a new twist to its popular “Nine, Wine & Dine” program, both available now through the end of the year. Featuring two courses encompassing 27 spectacular holes of golf, Makai Golf Club is situated in the renowned Princeville Resort community on Kauaʻi’s north shore.  The course’s new Unlimited Golf Package, valid for play through December 31, offers players three full days of golf--as many holes as they can play on the 18-hole Makai and 9-hole Woods courses.

Nicknamed the Garden Island, Kauai is green and flourishing with lush flora that runs from the mountains to the ocean. Kauai offers more than 50 miles of white-sand beaches – more beach per mile than any other island in Hawaii. Other natural wonders include the 3,567-foot deep Waimea Canyon, dubbed “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” and the 3,000-foot towering mountain cliffs overlooking the Napali Coast along the northwest shoreline.
